Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu told media on Wednesday that the Japanese government is shocked by reports of the large number of civilian lives lost in Ukraine due to Russia's acts, and is taking the calamity extremely seriously.

Tohoku Shinkansen to resume operations along full length of track on April 14

The operator of a Shinkansen bullet train service in northeastern Japan says it will resume operations along its entire rail line on April 14. Trains have not been running along some sections since a strong earthquake hit the region last month.

Some segments of the Tohoku Shinkansen line connecting Tokyo and northeastern Japan were damaged and a train was derailed by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on March 16.

Japan's National Police Agency has produced leaflets for evacuees from Ukraine. The document provides the newcomers with advice on some of the necessities of life in their new home.

The leaflets are written in Ukrainian and feature illustrations showing such things as how to call the police, the fire brigade and ambulance services. They also detail traffic rules and outline how to respond to a disaster.

Details on the adaptation of popular Japanese manga series "Kimetsu no Yaiba," or "Demon Slayer," into a traditional Japanese Noh performance were announced on Tuesday.

The cartoon by Gotouge Koyoharu is set in Taisho-era Japan, about a century ago. It features a boy's battles with demons. Its film adaptation set a box-office record in Japan.

A program for foreign technical trainees has resumed in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, after border controls to prevent coronavirus infections were eased last month.

An organization of nursing care facilities in Komoro City has accepted 80 trainees from Indonesia and other countries. After a quarantine period, the trainees will listen to lectures for two months and then start interning at various facilities inside and outside the prefecture.

A Japanese government plane with 20 Ukrainian evacuees on board arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the chief cabinet secretary said the authorities would offer various kinds of assistance to them.

Matsuno Hirokazu told reporters that Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa learned during his latest trip to Poland that there are Ukrainians who wish to come to Japan, but are unable to secure the means to travel.

Japan's government has banned the export of luxury goods to Russia. The move is to pressure oligarchs -- wealthy tycoons who are close to President Vladimir Putin.

The ban took effect from Tuesday. It applies to 19 items, including cars worth over 6 million yen or about 49,000 dollars, and motorcycles valued at more than 600,000 yen or about 4,900 dollars. High-end whiskey and watches worth over 40,000 yen or about 330 dollars are also on the list.
