Kishida Fumio stressed at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday the importance of protecting the economy and people's lives. He said social and economic activities need to be kept on a path to recovery.

Japan's jobless rate at 2.7% in February

Japan's jobless rate dropped slightly in February. New government data shows the seasonally adjusted figure at 2.7 percent, down 0.1 points from January.

The internal affairs ministry says there were 1.8 million unemployed people last month. That is 150 thousand fewer than in the same month last year, and is the eighth straight month the number has dropped.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says a submarine volcano, far south of the country's main island of Honshu, has erupted. It issued a volcanic warning for nearby waters.

The agency says a weather observation satellite recorded volcanic material erupting from the Funka Asane area in the Ogasawara Islands at around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Work to move quake-hit derailed Shinkansen train begins

East Japan Railway has begun work to move a Shinkansen bullet train that derailed in a powerful earthquake earlier this month.

The bullet train was running on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line in Miyagi Prefecture on March 16 when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Japan's northeast coast. Of the 17 cars in the train, 16 came off the tracks. Four passengers were injured.
