Kishida Stresses Importance Of Ensuring Maritime Safety By Rule Of Law

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has stressed the importance of ensuring maritime safety based on the rule of law.
Kishida gave a speech on Saturday at the graduation ceremony of the Japan Coast Guard Academy in the city of Kure in Hiroshima Prefecture, western Japan.
The prime minister said Russia's aggression against Ukraine has threatened international order and peace.
He said ensuring peace for the next generation is the most important responsibility given to us.
Referring to the repeated entries of Chinese government ships into Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, Kishida said the international community is facing challenges concerning the ocean.
He said those challenges need to be resolved by rules and laws, not by force.
Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. China and Taiwan claim them.
The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.
