More Torrential Rain Expected In Japan's Northern Regions
Japan's weather officials say a low-pressure system accompanied by a front will likely bring further torrential rain to northern regions.
The Meteorological Agency says unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to bring torrential rain and thunder to the northeastern Tohoku region, Hokkaido, Niigata Prefecture, and the Hokuriku region on Monday and Tuesday.
Heavy rain of more than 50 millimeters per hour is expected in some areas.
Over a 24-hour period through Tuesday morning, up to 150 millimeters of rain will likely fall in the Tohoku region and up to 100 millimeters in Hokkaido and Niigata Prefecture.
In the following 24 hours through Wednesday morning, further rainfall of up to 200 millimeters is expected in Tohoku and Niigata, and up to 150 millimeters in Hokkaido and Hokuriku.
The agency is warning of heightened risks of disasters, such as landslides and flooding, in northern Tohoku where the ground remains loosened following record rainfall over the weekend.
The agency is urging people to stay alert for landslides, swollen rivers, flooding, lightning strikes, and gusts of wind including tornadoes.
