Tokyo Group To Offer Humanitarian Support For Ukrainians

A social welfare group in Tokyo is preparing to provide humanitarian assistance for Ukrainian people just as it did for Polish children about 100 years ago.
Fukudenkai operates welfare facilities for children and others in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward. The group accepted 375 Polish children who had been left in Siberia after World War One. They later returned home.
The group says it heard that its humanitarian assistance for the children had been introduced in teaching materials at Polish schools. A cherry tree was also planted at the group's headquarters as a symbol of friendship with Poland.
The group is collecting donations from supporters including through a crowdfunding platform. It says it has received more than 30 million yen, or about 246,000 dollars, so far.
The group says it will send the donations to a branch office in the Polish city of Krakow. It plans to distribute meal coupons to Ukrainian evacuees so they can eat at restaurants for free.
The head of Fukudenkai says the group wants to offer Ukrainians as much support as possible.
