Bmw Recalls 2020 Toyota Supras (no, Really) Over Improper Welds, Owners Might Get New Cars

A recall has been issued for a handful of 2020 Toyota Supra models and it won’t simply be a case of the cars needing a minor repair, as they will need to be replaced by new ones.

But before we get into details, it’s worth noting that the recall comes from BMW, which, well, makes sense it’s the one that manufacturers the 2020 Supra in Austria, so it’s also responsible for any potential defects.

Documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that a total of seven Toyota Supra models have seatbelt guide loops that may feature improper welds. This means that in the event of a crash, the faulty welds may not let the seatbelt do its job and restrain the driver properly.

According to the NHTSA, while BMW issued the recall, Toyota will be the one to contact owners of the affected vehicles by phone and if they’re unable to reach them, they will be notified through mail. They will be required to take their vehicles to a local Toyota dealership for inspection, and if it is determined that the car does indeed feature improper seatbelt guide loop welds, it will be replaced.

It remains to be seen if customers will simply be given a new Supra from a dealership lot or if owners will have to wait for one to be built at the Austrian production site and shipped to them.

Whatever happens, it’s certainly not the news owners of the affected Supras would want to hear. The silver lining in this cloud is that Toyota (…or BMW) has owned up to its mistake and will give them entirely new cars.
