Fernando Alonso Samples New Toyota Supra, Walks Away Impressed

Fernando Alonso hasn't just driven some of the planet's fastest automobiles but he also happens to be one of the world's best racing drivers. It's fitting then that Toyota recently handed him the keys to test out the all-new Supra and put it through its paces.

Toyota’s new Supra is easily one of the most exciting cars the company has released in the last decade and it makes sense that the firm is doing everything in its power to promote the sports car. There aren’t many better ways to do this than by having a world champion racing driver thrash it around and sing its praises.

The Spaniard had his fun in the Supra at Fuji International Speedway. As you’d imagine, he was easily able to take it to its limits and enjoy the BMW-sourced six-cylinder engine.

That’s one impressed racing driver

The Fuji International Speedway has a nice mix of fast and high-speed corners and Alonso seems particularly impressed with the car’s cornering abilities. He also seems pleasantly surprised by its braking abilities. Sure, Alonso is used to Formula One cars which can pull 5 g under braking, but the Supra does seem pretty capable at shedding off speed when needed.

As a reminder, the aforementioned six-cylinder BMW engine powering the Supra displaces 3.0-liters and offers up 335 hp and 368 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. This engine is mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission that helps push the sports car to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.3 seconds with launch control enabled.

No manual transmission for the new-age Supra has been announced but we’re holding out hope that it will eventually arrive.
