Tamburini Delights Home Crowd With Imola Podium

Tamburini Delights Home Crowd with Imola PodiumPata Yamaha Official STK1000 Team rider Roberto Tamburini put on a brilliant display for the passionate Italian fans at Imola as he secured his second podium of the season at round three of the 2017 FIM European Superstock 1000 Championship. The 23-year-old Italian crossed the line in second to the delight of the packed grandstands and now sits third in the championship standings with 43 points. It was an unfortunate day for his teammate Florian Marino, who crashed out of the race while battling for the podium.

The STK1000 race had to be re-started twice after two red flags, but Tamburini did not let this affect his focus when the lights went out for the third time at Imola for a shortened 9-lap sprint race. The Italian got a blistering start and was soon fighting valiantly to stick with race leader Michael Rinaldi. Tamburini gave as good as he got, but try as he might he could not catch the championship leader and had to settle for second, crossing the line 2.309s behind his rival. This result sees Tamburini move up to third in the standings with 43 points, 27 behind championship leader Rinaldi. The local hero’s result is even more impressive considering he is still recovering from a fractured C5 vertebrae sustained in his crash at Assen in the previous round.

His teammate Marino started the race from the head of the second row in fourth. He got an even better start than Tamburini, passing him for second and then setting his sights on Rinaldi. Unfortunately for the French rider, while braking into the first chicane on the third lap, the front of his bike closed on him and he crashed out of the race. Frustrated at a missed opportunity, Marino will be more determined than ever to return stronger and ready to fight once more for the race win at Donington. He is currently fourth in the championship standings with 36 points, just seven points behind his teammate.

Tamburini and Marino will be back in action on their Yamaha R1Ms and looking to close the gap to Rinaldi in the standings at round four of the 2017 FIM Superstock 1000 European Championship at Donington Park on the 26-28th May.

“Imola is always a fantastic circuit, because of the layout of the track and the incredible fans! In the race, I started well and tried to push to catch Rinaldi, but he and his bike are very strong around Imola. During the race, my neck was not too bad although it was sore and the muscles became tired, but I just focused on trying to win the race. It is an important result for me and my team after my ninth place at Assen. Now we want to carry this form on to Donington and have another good race. I am very happy today! Thanks to Yamaha, Pata and all of my team for putting in so much work for this result.”

“It was a little bit of a strange race with the three starts. When we got to the third race, I was feeling very confident. I passed my teammate; I was feeling good and able to keep a strong pace and stay with Rinaldi, which I was doing. On lap 3, when entering the first chicane, I released the brake and the front just closed on me. It was a strange crash as I was not over pushing, so it surprised me, but that is racing. I am disappointed for the team and for all the work we had done up to that point, because we had managed to develop a strong package for the race and I was feeling good. Anyway, I accept the situation, I made a mistake and crashed. It is like this, there is nothing I can do about it now and I will come back stronger at Donington. In the past I have had some good results there and I actually enjoy the next few tracks on the calendar, so I am looking forward to the next round.”

“In general I am very satisfied for this weekend, because Roberto has scored a great podium, but I am disappointed for Florian because he had a very unlucky crash when he was in second and battling for the win. It is a shame he lost out on some championship points, but Roberto made up for it with an amazing ride. We feel that we have a very strong package now and are looking forward to going to Donington with a similar focus, to allow us to fight for the race win once more.”
