Expected to bring their small car production to more than 500,000 units annually, including the latest Yaris and Yaris Cross, the new A-segment model will be built on the same GA-B platform.

Power will be supplied by a small internal combustion engine, Toyota said, which will help keep it affordable. However, previous reports have indicated that a self-charging hybrid might eventually join the range, while a battery-electric option is out of the question.

"The choice of powertrain is equally important. The A-segment remains dominated by models powered by internal combustion engines, further emphasizing how cost remains a key consideration", Toyota said. "The market outlook sees this situation continuing, with financial accessibility remaining a dominant consideration for customers."

Toyota did not refer to the new A-segment car as the Aygo, suggesting perhaps that it will bear a different moniker. Still, we should find out whether that is the case or not close to the end of 2021 or early next year, when it is expected to premiere.

Production will take place at the same factory where the current Aygo is manufactured, in the Czech Republic. Its French siblings, the Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1, will not live past their current generations, as the PSA Group announced in 2018.
