Activist Escape Casting Pall On Us Chinese Security Talks

Activist escape casting pall on US Chinese security talksWith rumors swirling that North Korea has been busily making preparations for a nuclear test, the fate of a blind Chinese human rights activist is casting a pall over U.S. and Chinese policy-makers' plans to act together and put Pyongyang under reins.

According to a U.S.-based rights group, Chen Guangcheng, the blind rights lawyer who escaped from his heavily guarded home in Shandong Province on Sunday, ''is under U.S. protection,'' presumably given sanctuary at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

The development came as U.S. and Chinese officials were gearing up for high-level security and economic talks scheduled to open in Beijing on Thursday.
