TOKONAME, Aichi Prefecture--Passengers flying from Chubu Centrair International Airport here have a final option before boarding their flights for the coins jangling in their pockets: buy some "gacha gacha" capsule toys.
More than 80 of the popular gacha gacha vending machines were installed on the first floor of the Passenger Terminal Building at Chubu Centrair International Airport on April 12.
About 150 varieties of toys costing between 100 yen (92 cents) and 500 yen are available. Offered under the slogan of, "You can buy toys with your spare change," the machines are mainly aimed at inbound tourists before leaving for home.
According to T-Arts Co., which installed the machines, sales have increased by three to five times the normal level at Narita, Kansai, Fukuoka and other airports where the gacha gacha machines have already been installed.
