Auspicious Event Begins At Nagano Temple For Those Seeking A Change Of Fortune

Auspicious event begins at Nagano temple for those seeking a change of fortuneVisitors hoping for some good luck turned out to Zenkoji temple here on April 5 for an auspicious event held once every six years.
The "Gokaicho" event involves opening to the public the "Maedachi Honzon" statue, which is said to be a replica of the temple's hidden principal image.

At a little after 6 a.m. on April 5, Gencho Komatsu, the head priest at Zenkoji, opened the doors to the main hall, revealing the Maedachi Honzon.

The statue is connected by a gold rope with the Eko-bashira pillar erected in front of the main hall.

The belief is that touching the Eko-bashira will bring good luck. Many visitors stood in line to touch the pillar.

The Gokaicho will continue until May 31.

With the recent start of extended service on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, temple officials are expecting a record turnout this year, exceeding the 6.7 million visitors in 2009.
