Bathhouse Gets Makeover With Photos By Mika Ninagawa

Bathhouse gets makeover with photos by Mika Ninagawa

MATSUYAMA--Photographs taken by film director and photographer Mika Ninagawa have added some pizzazz to the historic Dogo Onsen Honkan bathhouse for the Dogo Onsenart 2018 art event.

The "Dogo Onsen Honkan Installation" features pictures of fireworks shot by Ninagawa in various places across the country. After dark, the bathhouse building is lit up to give it a mysterious glow.

The installation will be on display until the end of May next year.

The first Dogo Onsenart event was held in 2014 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Dogo Onsen Honkan’s renovation.

Ninagawa served as the main artist for the Dogo Art 2015 event. The hot spring resort was turned into the "Ninagawa World," with her photos featured on "noren" curtains and streetcars operated by Iyo Railway Co.

For this year’s Onsenart, 34 photos, including those of fireworks excerpted from her photography book "Light of" and previously unpublished ones, decorate parts of the "shoji" sliding doors and windows on the north and west sides of the bathhouse.

The building is illuminated between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.
