Acclaimed actor Ken Watanabe will star in the upcoming revival production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I" at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater.
The casting was announced June 30.
This will be the first time for the 54-year-old actor, who most recently starred in the Hollywood blockbuster remake of "Godzilla," to perform in a stage production in the United States.
Set in 1860s Bangkok, the story illustrates the romance that develops between the King of Siam and the British governess of his children, despite their disagreements. Watanabe will play the role of the monarch.
Written by the acclaimed duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical first hit Broadway in 1951, and has been revived three times.
The last performance on Broadway was in 1996.
