Kyoto Goes Kawaii: Amenbodo Adds Modern Twists To Traditional 'karinto' Snack

KYOTO GOES KAWAII: Amenbodo adds modern twists to traditional 'karinto' snack

Traditional snack food "karinto" usually comes in a brown sugar flavor, but fans of the treat should try it with a different twist.

Amenbodo Co. offers karinto in 24 flavors such as cheese, "wasabi" (Japanese horseradish), vegetable, and tomato and basil.

The confectionery shop takes pride in turning traditional things into something contemporary.

The snack varies in thickness and hardness depending on the flavor, with the sweet potato-flavored karinto having a crispy texture.

Shoppers can also taste the sweet treat at Amenbodo, which is housed in a remodeled "machiya" townhouse built 100 years ago. Each pack is priced 362 yen ($3.20), excluding tax.
