Police in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan, have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of stabbing a police officer and stealing his loaded handgun.
Police apprehended the suspect in the city of Mino shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Monday on the charges of robbery and attempted murder.
The officer, Suzunosuke Kose, was found stabbed early Sunday morning near the police box in Suita City where he had been on duty. His handgun loaded with five bullets was also stolen. He remains unconscious.
Police identified the suspect as Yujiro Iimori, who used to live near the crime scene.
They say that after disclosing images of a man acting in a suspicious manner taken by the police box's closed-circuit camera, they received a call from a person who said the man looked like his son.
They identified this man as the attacker, and put him on a nationwide wanted list.
Investigative sources say the suspect had the handgun in his possession when he was arrested.
Police say they will look into his motives and the circumstances of the crime.
