NHK has learned that about 400 kilograms of cocaine was found in October in a container on a cargo ship that entered the port of Kobe, western Japan. It's the largest amount seized at a single time in Japan.
Investigative sources say personnel from Kobe Customs, Hyogo Prefectural Police Headquarters, and other organizations jointly looked over the container, found cocaine, and seized it. They say the drugs have an estimated street value of about 74 million dollars.
The cargo ship is believed to have entered Kobe Port from overseas.
Customs officials and police are investigating the case, suspecting that an international trafficking organization is involved.
In August, 177 kilograms of cocaine was found on a cargo ship in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan.
