Officials of the Japanese city of Maebashi say five residents of a facility caring for elderly people died through Tuesday after a mass outbreak of influenza earlier in January.
The officials say the five, men and women in their 80s and 90s, lived at Eimei, a home for elderly people requiring special care in the city, north of Tokyo.
They say the deceased were among 35 residents who developed the illness since January 10th. They are said to have died from pneumonia and other causes that deteriorated their health.
The city officials say they cannot rule out the possibility that the deaths were related to influenza. They say they will look into how the infection occurred.
