7,000 people evacuating after record rains

Following devastating rains in western Japan, NHK has learned from local governments that more than 7,000 people were taking shelter at designated evacuation centers in 15 prefectures as of 5 PM on Wednesday.

Okayama Prefecture has the largest number of evacuees, at 3,080, followed by Hiroshima Prefecture, at 2,996.

The Health Ministry says more than 244,000 households were without water as of noon on Wednesday. Local municipalities and Self-Defense Forces are dispatching water trucks.

Telecom company NTT West says 12,000 landline and internet connections were down in Okayama, Hiroshima and Ehime prefectures as of Wednesday. It is not known when those services will resume.
