Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has expressed sorrow over the damage caused by the fire at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, and said the Japanese stand in solidarity with the French people.
In a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, Abe said the cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a symbol of Paris and is beloved by people throughout the world.
He said he was shocked to see the cathedral in flames and was deeply saddened.
Abe said that on behalf of his government and the people of Japan, he offers sympathy to the people of France. He noted that at this time of great loss, the hearts of the Japanese people are with the people of France.
