Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said Japan will continue to support the re-building of Kosovo.
Abe met with visiting Kosovo President Hashim Thaci at the prime minister's official residence on Friday.
Kosovo was an autonomous province of Serbia in the former Yugoslavia. It declared independence in 2008 after ethnic conflicts in the late 1990s.
But 11 years later the country has yet to achieve economic growth due to political instability.
Prime Minister Abe conveyed his intention to continue to support Kosovo's re-building efforts.
The two leaders agreed to work together to improve the environment for Japanese companies to expand investment in Kosovo. The country has a large, young labor force.
After the meeting, Abe said 10 years have passed since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and noted that bilateral relations have developed significantly.
He said two leaders vowed to continue to work together in the future.
