Award-winning novelist Tomiko Miyao passes away at 88Award-winning novelist Tomiko Miyao passed away of natural causes on Dec. 30, her family said Wednesday. She was 88.
Known for her autobiographical and historical novels, the native of Kochi city received an award for a new female writer in 1962.

While Miyao won the Naoki Prize, given for popular fiction, in 1979 for "Ichigen no Koto" (One-Stringed Japanese Zither), many of her works were adapted into movies and TV dramas.

She was also chosen as a person of cultural merit in 2009.
