Chugoku Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it began safety checks on all three of its nuclear reactors in Shimane Prefecture so as to gain government approval for their operation.
The results on the Shimane complex's No. 2 unit, which is now in operation, are due out later this year as required, while it has not been decided when to report the results on the No. 1 unit, now undergoing a regular checkup, according to the utility that services the western part of Honshu Island.
Chugoku has decided to perform the safety check also on the No. 3 unit, now under construction, although the government has set no clear regulations about the testing of reactors that have yet to be completed.
