Coronavirus cases in Japan top 10,000

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Japan surpassed 10,000 on Saturday after 582 new cases were detected nationwide.

The tally now stands at 10,431, including people determined to be positive during airport quarantine checks, health ministry officials, and individuals who returned to Japan on chartered planes.

The addition of the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the total to 11,143.

The number of fatalities stands at 236, including 13 from the vessel.

Tokyo tops the list of prefectures with the most infections at 2,975. Osaka is second with 1,163, followed by Kanagawa with 752, Chiba with 663, Saitama with 627, Fukuoka with 503 and Hyogo with 502.

Health ministry officials say 211 people were in serious condition as of Friday, including four from the cruise ship.

The officials say 1,657 had recovered and left hospital. Of these, 1,012 were diagnosed in Japan, while 645 were infected on the ship.
