Coronavirus cases keep rising in Japan

The number of coronavirus infections in Japan increased to 936 as of 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, with three new cases confirmed. The data was compiled by local governments and the health ministry.

The figure includes 14 cases confirmed among people who returned from China's Hubei Province on chartered flights.

By prefecture, Hokkaido now has 157 cases, followed by Aichi with 130, Osaka with 117, Tokyo with 111, Hyogo with 92 and Kanagawa with 64.

Seventeen of the 936 cases include health ministry and quarantine officials and people who were confirmed to have the virus while passing through airport quarantine counters.

In addition to these 936 cases, 712 people from the Diamond Princess cruise ship have been infected, for a total of 1,648.

Thirty-nine people have died. 32 of them were infected in Japan and the other seven had been on the cruise ship.

The ministry says 61 infected people, including 12 from the cruise ship, were in serious condition as of Thursday.

A total of 766 people, including 551 from the cruise ship, had been discharged from hospital by Thursday.
