Coronavirus infections keep rising in Japan

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Japan has exceeded 9,000 as of Thursday. The figure includes people determined to be positive during airport quarantine checks, health ministry officials, and individuals who returned to Japan on chartered planes.

574 new cases were confirmed across the country, bringing the total to 9,296.

The 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the total to 10,008.

Twelve more deaths were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the number of fatalities to 203, including 13 from the ship.

Tokyo tops the list of prefectures with the most infections at 2,595. Osaka is second with 1,020, followed by Kanagawa with 675, Chiba with 595, Saitama with 564, Fukuoka with 462 and Hyogo with 454.

Health ministry officials say 197 people were in serious condition as of Thursday, including four from the cruise ship.

The officials say 1,563 had recovered and left hospital. Of these, 918 were diagnosed in Japan, while 645 were infected on the ship.
