Defense chief aims for quick base work

Japan's defense chief says he intends to move ahead quickly with preparations to resume reclamation work for the relocation of a US military base in Okinawa.

Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters on Tuesday that the land ministry told him about its decision to temporarily suspend Okinawa Prefecture's revocation of a landfill permit.

Iwaya said his ministry is proceeding under a consistent policy of easing the burden on Okinawa.

He said the construction work must resume quickly in order to return land used by the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station as soon as possible.
