People in Japan and elsewhere are about to witness an event that hasn't been seen in a generation with traditions dating back centuries. In just a few hours, the new Emperor will formally proclaim his enthronement.
Emperor Naruhito took the throne in May, but today his accession will be celebrated by dignitaries of Japan and other countries.
The first event of the day is starting at the Imperial Palace in central Tokyo.
The Emperor is visiting the three Imperial sanctuaries to report to the Sun Goddess, the souls of his ancestors, and various deities that the enthronement ceremony will be held today.
The Empress is separately visiting the sanctuaries. The ritual is attended by Crown Prince and Princess Akishino and other Imperial family members, as well as the country's leaders.
