Empress Emerita Undergoes Cataract Surgery

Empress Emerita undergoes cataract surgery

Empress Emerita Michiko has undergone cataract surgery at a hospital in Tokyo.

The Empress Emerita was diagnosed with cataracts after her vision started to become blurry several years ago. The symptoms progressed in recent years, and both eyes required surgery.

On Sunday, the Empress Emerita had an operation on her left eye, following one on the right eye a week ago.

She entered the hospital wearing sunglasses to protect her eyes from bright light.

The surgery removed the cloudy lens and replaced it with an artificial lens. Her right eye is also reportedly recovering well after last week's operation.

The Imperial Household Agency says the Empress Emerita expressed gratitude to hospital staff for their meticulous care and a successful operation.
