Food bank in Gunma helps people hit by pandemic

A food bank in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, has handed out food and daily necessities to people whose livelihoods have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The nonprofit group set up by owners of local eating and drinking establishments offered the items in Isesaki City on Sunday.

The group had made an appeal on social media for rice and vegetables as well as sanitary products and tissue paper. They collected enough donations for about 200 people.

Many people came to the venue to pick up items.

The city is home to many foreign residents. English and Portuguese interpreters helped them, and a multilingual signboard was set up at the venue.

The group's representative, Kagaya Yuka, says the owners want to help people in need, and she hopes the donations will ease their hardship.

The group plans to hand out food and other items on a regular basis.
