Foreign visitors to Japan down 93% in March

The coronavirus pandemic sharply decreased the number of foreigners visiting Japan last month.

Japanese tourism officials say the figure for March was 193,700, down 93 percent from a year earlier.

The decline is the largest ever, exceeding the previous record of 62 percent posted in April 2011, a month after the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan.

The monthly total is the first below 200,000 in 31 years.

The plunge is attributable to Japan's expansion of entry bans on visitors from not only China and South Korea but also Europe and other regions last month.
