A funeral for former UN High Commissioner for Refugees Sadako Ogata has been held at a church in Tokyo.
Relatives, friends and others paid their final respects on Tuesday to the first Japanese chief of the UN organization. They included Empress Emerita Michiko, who shares Ogata's alma mater.
Kazuo Oda, who has known Ogata for more than 20 years through tennis, said she was a busy but very friendly person.
He said he ran into Ogata at a tennis club five months ago, and they shared their wish to play tennis together again. He said he was sorry they could not do so.
A woman who is a relative said Ogata was a very kind person. She said Ogata rushed to a hospital when the woman's mother was taken there.
