Giant panda in Tokyo turns 1 year old

Visitors to Tokyo's Ueno Zoo have celebrated the first birthday of a giant panda cub named Xiang Xiang.

About 4,000 people gathered in front of the zoo's gate on Tuesday morning before opening time.

The visitors were amused by the cub's antics, like climbing a tree and eating bamboo shoots.

The zoo handed out commemorative cards to mark Xiang Xiang's birthday. It is also selling a photo album about the popular panda.

A woman said she saw Xiang Xiang climbing a tree, and that she was glad to say "happy birthday" to the panda.

Hirofumi Watabe, the zoo's deputy head, said the year went by very quickly, and that he is relieved that the panda is growing well. He said officials will continue taking good care of the animal.
