A zoo in central Japan has held a party to celebrate the first birthday of a giant panda named Saihin.
Two hundred people were chosen by lottery to take part in the event at Adventure World in the town of Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture on Wednesday.
The panda fans first watched a video showing the growth of the female panda. Then they cheered as Saihin actually appeared in front of them.
Zoo staff set up a play area using bamboo and playground equipment decorated with apples and carrots to resemble a birthday cake. The fans watched the panda eating and playing with the gifts.
A 9-year-old girl said that Saihin looked cute and joyful when she was climbing.
Saihin is now about 130 centimeters tall and weighs about 26 kilograms. Zookeeper Tomoko Endo said Saihin needed extra care, because at birth she was 75 grams, which is smaller than average. She said she is happy that the panda has continued to grow, and hopes that Saihin will keep using all those gifts to stay healthy.
