The mayor of Ginowan City in Okinawa Prefecture has asked US government officials to present a timetable for the return of land occupied by a US airbase in the city.
Masanori Matsugawa spoke to reporters in Washington on Wednesday after meeting separately with US State Department and Defense Department officials.
Matsugawa said he and US officials share an understanding that the only way to resolve the issue of the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Ginowan is to build an alternative facility in the Henoko district of Nago City. He said they reaffirmed the need for the return of land as soon as possible.
The mayor added that when he asked for a timetable, the US officials expressed regret that they were unable to set a date, but suggested they will work on it.
Matsugawa plans to visit Hawaii on Thursday and make a similar request to the US Indo-Pacific Command.
