Govt. Mulls Road Toll Rise For Tokyo 2020 Games

Govt. mulls road toll rise for Tokyo 2020 Games

The central and Tokyo governments are considering raising tolls on a major expressway network across the capital during the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Officials are discussing the toll hike option for the Metropolitan Expressway network as a way to ease congestion during the Games.

Sources say drivers of regular vehicles may have to pay up to 3,000 yen, or about 27 dollars, to use the network between 6 AM and 10 PM.

Large and mid-sized trucks would likely be exempt from the higher rates to avoid any impact on business.

The central government will work with Tokyo officials and urban planning experts to draw up a range of anti-congestion measures in coming months.

They want to ensure that heavy traffic does not impede the smooth movement of athletes, spectators, and other people involved in the Games.

Authorities are also urging firms to change their office hours and distribution routes, and to encourage employees to work from home.
