Gyms close, shops adjust to virus risk in Japan

Businesses in Japan are adjusting to a new reality as they face the fears and risks created by the coronavirus outbreak.

Gym operator Central Sports says almost all of its 240 outlets will be closed until March 10. Other gym companies have taken similar measures.

Mall operator Aeon Mall is trimming the opening hours at its 142 shopping malls. The company says all tenants except supermarkets will shorten their days by about 4 hours.

That's partly to deal with staff shortages as a result of nationwide school closures.

And conveyor belt sushi chain Hamazushi is taking away one of the defining features of its business.

Diners will no longer see dishes circling on a belt in front of them. Instead, they will be asked to order from a touch-screen panel.
