Professional player Yoshiharu Habu has won the NHK Cup TV Tournament for shogi, or Japanese chess, setting a new record of 45 official competition victories.
The ninth-dan shogi master beat Masataka Goda, who also holds the highest rank, in the final aired on Sunday.
Each player was only given ten minutes.
Habu made full use of the "fu" piece he put on his opponent's half in the middle of the game. Goda conceded defeat after the seventy-seventh move.
Habu has a total of 99 career titles. Another "Meijin" master, Yasuharu Oyama, has won 80.
