Harry Potter theme park to be built in Tokyo

A Harry Potter theme park will be built on the site of a 94-year-old amusement park in Tokyo that's set to close at the end of this month.

Toshimaen is one of the largest amusement parks in the Greater Tokyo area, offering rides and swimming pools in an area covering 220,000 square meters.

Seibu Railway, which owns the site of Toshimaen, signed a deal with Warner Bros. Japan, Itochu Corporation and others to build the Harry Potter theme park. The companies made the announcement on Tuesday.

The 30,000-square-meter theme park is slated to open in the first half of 2023. Sets, costumes and props used in Harry Potter films will be on display, allowing fans to experience scenes from the popular series.

An open space just outside the facility will be accessible to everyone. Visitors will be able to enjoy sculptures placed at the facility's entrance of mystical characters from the films.

Japan has another Harry Potter theme park inside Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. But the studio tour-type park will be only second in the world after London.

Warner Bros. commented that it is looking forward to creating something very special while maintaining harmony with the local environment.
