A severe heat wave hit eastern and western Japan on Monday -- a national holiday.
The Meteorological Agency says the thermometer topped 35 degrees Celsius at 60 locations across the country.
The daytime high in the city of Tatebayashi, north of Tokyo, was 37.6 degrees, and in central Tokyo, 33 degrees.
The hot weather is expected to continue on Tuesday.
An NHK survey says one person died and nearly 700 people in 45 prefectures were hospitalized for heat stroke as of 8 PM on Monday.
