Heavy rain hits Japan's Tokai region

Heavy rain has pummeled the Tokai region, central Japan, prompting weather officials to warn of mudslides.

The accumulated rainfall for the one hour through 5 p.m. on Wednesday reached 32 millimeters in Kawazu Town in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Localized downpours accompanied by lightning may hit the Tokai and its neighboring Kanto regions sometime through early Thursday morning. Kanto includes Tokyo.

Tokai has received more than 300 millimeters of precipitation since the current wet spell began on Tuesday. A mudslide alert is in place in areas of Shizuoka and Gifu prefectures.

Japan's Meteorological Agency is also warning of flooding in low-lying areas and overflowing rivers, as well as lightning and sudden gusts of wind.
