Heavy rain to continue Tohoku area, Niigata

The Meteorological Agency says heavy rainfall will likely hit the Tohoku region in northeastern Japan and Niigata Prefecture through Wednesday morning.

Weather officials are warning of possible mudslides and flooding in the areas. They say the level of rainfall may require officials to issue emergency warnings, and urge residents to make preparations.

In some parts of Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan, more than 30 millimeters of heavy rain was recorded during a one-hour period through 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

More than 50 millimeters of heavy rain per hour is forecast for Tohoku and Niigata.

In the 24-hour period through Wednesday noon, 150 millimeters of rainfall is forecast in Niigata and coastal areas facing the Sea of Japan in the southern Tohoku region.

A mudslide warning has been issued for the prefectures of Yamagata, Miyagi, Niigata, Nagano, Gifu and Nagasaki.
