Hello Kitty Shinkansen bullet train debuts

A new Shinkansen bullet train featuring Sanrio's popular character, Hello Kitty, has made its debut in western Japan.

The West Japan Railway Company hopes to attract more travelers by teaming up with a character that is popular around the world.

Until last month, the 8-car, 500 series train was decorated with a design that used the popular animated TV series "Neon Genesis Evangelion" as a motif.

Vivid pink ribbons are painted on the white train cars, along with the Hello Kitty character, who is wearing a conductor's uniform.

Inside the train, there are more Hello Kitty decorations. There is also a space where passengers can take commemorative photos.

Many fans gathered at Shin-Osaka Station for a ceremony held on the platform.

Hello Kitty and the station master gave the signal for the Hakata-bound train to take off.

An 8-year-old girl said Hello Kitty's costume was cute. She said that she wants to ride on the train.

The Hello Kitty Shinkansen will travel from Shin-Osaka to Hakata and back every day, except when it is being inspected.
