Hotline Can Assess Callers For Dementia

Hotline can assess callers for dementia

Japan has one of the world's fastest aging populations, and one consequence is a rise in dementia cases. For people who may be wondering about their own family members, there's a new hotline that can provide some clarity.

The AI-based service from telecom firm NTT Communications prompts callers to answer a few basic questions.

It assesses the tone of their voice, the speed of their response, and hundreds of other factors to determine whether they may be suffering from dementia. It can provide an answer in about a minute.

The company says the service is 93-percent accurate.

A representative says his own grandparents suffered from dementia, so he hopes the hotline can provide some certainty for other families.

The service is free until the end of next March.
