Exactly 20 months before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, the head of the International Olympic Committee has visited a planned venue in Fukushima Prefecture.
Fukushima was devastated by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident.
Thomas Bach and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium, which will host softball and baseball events in the 2020 Games.
Bach is in Japan to attend IOC meetings in Tokyo later this month. He said he was impressed by the progress of the reconstruction. Bach told Abe that he is happy to see how sports played an important role in the psychological recovery of survivors.
The prime minister said he wants to call the Tokyo Games the 'Reconstruction Olympics' and show the world how Japan has recovered.
Abe says Fukushima is the best place to show off the power of the Olympics and sports. The Olympic torch relay will start in the prefecture.
