Japan in grip of scorching summer heat

Japan has been in the grip of a scorching heat wave. A daytime high of 39 degrees Celsius is forecast for some parts of the country.

Weather officials say a high pressure system is covering a wide area of Japan on Thursday.

Before noon, recorded highs were 37.1 degrees in the city of Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, 36.9 degrees in the city of Date, Fukushima Prefecture, and 35 degrees in central Tokyo.

The mercury is expected to further rise. A daytime high of 39 degrees is forecast for the city of Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, as well as 38 degrees for the city of Kyoto, and 36 degrees for the city of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

People are advised to keep hydrated, avoid outdoor sports and use air conditioning to prevent heatstroke.

Rising temperatures are likely to create unstable atmospheric conditions, causing localized rain clouds to develop in some areas.

Weather officials are warning of sudden weather changes, such as thunderstorms and gusts of wind.
