Japan - India 2+2 Meeting Called Off

Japan-India 2+2 meeting called off

The governments of Japan and India have called off a meeting of their foreign and defense ministers due to a surge in coronavirus infections in India.

Japan and India were to hold their second two-plus-two meeting in Tokyo this week.

But India has reported more than 200,000 daily infections since the start of this week. A daily record of over 270,000 cases was confirmed.

The outbreak has made it difficult for India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and defense minister Rajnath Singh to travel to Japan.

Japan's Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide plans to visit India during the holiday week from the end of this month, but the government is carefully watching the situation there before making a final decision.
