Japan Loses Over 100,000 Jobs In Pandemic
A Japanese government survey shows that more than 100,000 jobs have been lost due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The survey covers the period from the end of January last year to Wednesday.
It shows 100,425 people left employment or were about to do so. They include workers whose contracts were not renewed.
The actual figure is believed to be higher, because the data only covers cases known to labor authorities and public job-placement centers.
The monthly number of losses was from 5,000 to 6,000 from November to February. The pace picked up in March, jumping to over 9,200.
Labor ministry officials are asking businesses to retain workers while stepping up assistance to job seekers.
