Japan sees increase in virus cases

Japan has reported 309 more coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 4,768.

The figure reported on Wednesday includes people found to have the virus in airport quarantine checks, and those who returned to Japan on chartered planes from China.

Adding 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the total to 5,480. The number of deaths caused by the virus stands at 109, including 11 from the ship.

By prefecture, Tokyo tops the list of infections with 1,339. Osaka is second with 481, followed by Kanagawa with 332, Chiba with 307, Aichi with 260, Hyogo with 240, Saitama with 218, Hokkaido with 208 and Fukuoka with 203.

The tally of cases also includes 14 people who returned to Japan from China on chartered planes, and 84 people who are health ministry and quarantine officials or were found to have the virus during arrival checks at airports.

Health ministry officials say that as of Tuesday, 88 patients were in serious condition. Eight are from the cruise ship.

A total of 1,242 people, including 622 who were infected in Japan and 620 from the ship, had recovered and left hospital as of Tuesday.
