Japan to notify countries of new era's name

Japan's Foreign Ministry plans to inform countries around the world of the name of the new era as soon as it is decided.

The ministry says it will issue a document to the embassies of 154 countries in Tokyo and the missions of international organizations.

The document will state that Emperor Akihito will abdicate on April 30 and Crown Prince Naruhito will ascend the throne the next day. It will also announce in English the new era's name.

The ministry also plans to order Japanese ambassadors stationed abroad to inform the United Nations, the European Union and 195 countries recognized by Japan of the name.
